Avalanche

In an isolated mountain village living under the threat of an avalanche for nine months of the year, even the slightest sound is believed to have the power to trigger disaster. The villagers speak only in whispers, childbirth is forbidden, and the rules created in the name of survival gradually become more important than life itself. Avalanche, the internationally staged play by Tuncer Cücenoğlu, powerfully explores how fear can become a form of governance and how silence can evolve into an invisible authority shaping an entire community’s destiny. In this contemporary interpretation by the India-based theatre company The Gathered, silence is used not only as a dramatic device but also as a powerful symbol of oppression and social control. Addressing universal themes of freedom, tradition, fear, and individual resistance, Avalanche brings the tension of lives trapped between whispers to the stage through a striking theatrical language.
