In 17th century France, there is a man named Monsieur Jourdain—ignorant, naive, but very wealthy—with one ambition: to become a nobleman. To achieve this, he tries everything, meaningful or meaningless, useful or useless, but always costly. He becomes a laughingstock, is mocked by everyone, yet never gives up. His goal is clear: to enter the nobility, to court a noble Marquise, and to definitely marry his only daughter to a nobleman. But his daughter is in love with another young man. Molière weaves around this extraordinary character a Count who tries to exploit him, his down-to-earth wife, a servant and valet representing common sense and sincerity—like a piece of lace. Nearly every word is funny and every situation is ridiculous in this play.
