Miss Julie is the most staged and well-known play by the world-renowned Swedish writer August Strindberg, who has had a wide impact on European and American literature. The play takes place in the late 19th century in the home of a wealthy aristocratic family. Miss Julie, the young lady of the house, has an emotional encounter with the house servant Jean on a midsummer night. The play explores the positioning of women in society, the issue of class, through these two characters standing on opposite ends of the social spectrum, while also depicting the declining aristocracy and the rising bourgeoisie.
